Step Back in Time
New Haven was founded in 1638 when a group of English settlers arrived on these shores and laid out a new town on a precise nine-square grid. The Green sat at the center, and the idea of a haven for fresh starts took root.
That promise has carried forward. The city welcomed waves of newcomers, planted the elms that gave us our nickname, and built institutions that shaped culture and learning. Along the way, New Haven became a place of useful firsts and big ideas, from early bicycle patents to medical breakthroughs and a coal-fired pizza style beloved across the country.
You can see the timeline on foot, from the churches that frame the Green to modern landmarks that look to the future. Scroll through the moments below, then step outside and meet the places where history still lives.
