In New Haven, theater is a regional pastime. Each year, the country’s most talented performers take to the stages of New Haven to perform classic revivals and cutting edge new productions. As the fall breeze leads to winter chill, the people of New Haven (and our neighbors across New England) start booking tickets and taking seats inside (heated) theaters. Whether you’re looking to fill every space on your “New Haven theater” bingo card, or just looking for dinner and a show, here is every theatrical stage performance coming to the Elm City this fall and winter.

Here’s a peek inside The Shubert Theatre’s Broadway Series.

Come From Away

November 8-11, 2023

“This New York Times Critics’ Pick takes you into the heart of the remarkable true story of 7,000 stranded passengers and the small town in Newfoundland that welcomed them. Cultures clashed and nerves ran high, but uneasiness turned into trust, music soared into the night, and gratitude grew into enduring friendships.”

Chicago

December 7-10, 2023

“After 25 years, Chicago is still the one musical with everything that makes Broadway shimmy-shake: a universal tale of fame, fortune, and all that jazz, with one show stopping song after another and the most astonishing dancing you’ve ever seen.”

Wish You Were Here

October 5-28, 2023

“It’s 1978 and protests are breaking out across Iran, encroaching on the suburb where a tight-knit circle of girlfriends plans weddings, trades dirty jokes, and tries to hang onto a sense of normalcy. But as the forces of revolution escalate, each woman must choose whether to join a wave of emigration or to remain in their country, where the future is uncertain. With breathtaking humanity and cutting wit, 2023 Pulitzer Prize winner Sanaz Toossi chronicles a decade of life during and after war, as best friends forever become friends long lost—scattered and searching for home.”

The Salvagers (World Premiere)

November 24 – December 16, 2023

“Meet the Bosemans Salvage: 37-year-old Senior and 23-year-old Junior, at odds under the same roof during a snowy Chicago winter. Their icy relationship is further strained as potential romances for both father and son compel them to reckon with the past. The Salvagers is a beautifully observed and humorous play about the second, third, and fourth chances that may be possible when hard truths are delivered in love.”

Joan Didion’s The Year of Magical Thinking

November 8 – December 3, 2023

“Kathleen Chalfant stars in this one-woman theatrical adaptation of Joan Didion’s award-winning memoir, which examines the author’s journey of grief and healing. Didion’s wry, journalistic lens – applied here to her own life – combines with Chalfant’s virtuosic performance to create a moving theatrical journey. Performed in homes and gathering spaces throughout the New Haven area and in partnership with New York City’s Keen Company, The Year of Magical Thinking is a uniquely intimate experience.”
