The Green sat at the center, and the idea of a haven for fresh starts took root.<\/p>\n<p>That promise has carried forward. The city welcomed waves of newcomers, planted the elms that gave us our nickname, and built institutions that shaped culture and learning. Known as \u201cthe signer,\u201d Sherman was the only man to sign all four of America&#8217;s founding documents: Articles of Association, Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union, and U.S. Constitution.<\/div><\/div><\/article><div class=\"timeline-date  wpb_custom_e03dc5a8a169bfdfccbaed44883810c3\"><h3 class=\"time-text step-item-subtitle\">1790<\/h3><\/div><article class=\"timeline-box right   wpb_custom_e03dc5a8a169bfdfccbaed44883810c3\" data-appear-animation=\"fadeInRight\"><div><h4 class=\"timeline-item-title step-item-title\"><\/h4><div class=\"timeline-item-content\">James Hillhouse began planting elm trees in New Haven, initiating the first citywide beautification program in the nation. By the 1930s, Strouse expanded its portfolio of products to include some of the world\u2019s first pizza boxes.<\/div><\/div><\/article><div class=\"timeline-date  wpb_custom_e03dc5a8a169bfdfccbaed44883810c3\"><h3 class=\"time-text step-item-subtitle\">1863<\/h3><\/div><article class=\"timeline-box right   wpb_custom_e03dc5a8a169bfdfccbaed44883810c3\" data-appear-animation=\"fadeInRight\"><div><h4 class=\"timeline-item-title step-item-title\"><\/h4><div class=\"timeline-item-content\">A New Haven dentist by the name of Joseph H. Russo is to thank for starting the first Italian specialty store, Italian newspaper, bank, church and consulate and was the first Italian American to graduate Yale with a law degree.<\/div><\/div><\/article><div class=\"timeline-date  wpb_custom_e03dc5a8a169bfdfccbaed44883810c3\"><h3 class=\"time-text step-item-subtitle\">1873<\/h3><\/div><article class=\"timeline-box left   wpb_custom_e03dc5a8a169bfdfccbaed44883810c3\" data-appear-animation=\"fadeInLeft\"><div><h4 class=\"timeline-item-title step-item-title\"><\/h4><div class=\"timeline-item-content\">Yale faced off with Eton College of England at Hamilton Park in the first international football game ever played (which was a lot more like soccer).
